Pre-JD/LLM Workshop:

For Students Preparing to Study Law in the U.S.

Law study in the U.S. can be an incredibly rewarding experience. Students from

China nonetheless face unique challenges in the midst of a new culture―both

academically and culturally. The first month of school can be particularly stressful

encountering a new learning style, operating in a second language, and lacking a

sense of belonging. In particular, today’s growing group of JD candidates from China

may not have the benefit of specialized attention given to their LLM counterparts, and

will be expected from day one to perform on the same level as American JD students.

Although there is no replacement for the process of natural adaptation to a new

environment, it is hoped that this three-session workshop can very basically prepare

our pre-JD/LLM students for the exciting challenge that lies ahead. These sessions

will provide not only information, but also hands-on exercises to help students acquire

preliminary familiarity with the methods and expectations of U.S. law study. Any

students admitted to, applying to, or seriously considering JD or LLM programs in the

U.S. are welcome to join in this workshop.

Session 1 (April 6)

Learning to Think Like a Lawyer: Case Briefing and the Socratic Method

Session 2 (April 13)

Session 3 (April 20)
