〔讲座信息〕中欧人权系列讲座:人权和新科技

EU-China Human Rights Lecture Series - Human Rights and New Technologies

As part of the EU-China Human Rights Lecture Series, funded by the European Union, the Irish Centre for Human Rights is pleased to co-organise an event at the Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in China University of Political Science and Law.  

This event will address the contemporary and important subject of Human Rights and Technology. It will include three international experts who will talk on the following topics:

Dr. Kerry Brown, Head of the Asia Programme, Chatham House; Leader of the Europe China Research and Advice Network (ECRAN) will speak on“Human Rights and Technology: The Role of the State in Respect for Privacy of Citizens - What are the Bounds in the Era of New Media?”

Dr. Robert Weatherley, Lecturer, Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS), University of Cambridge will speak on “The Right to Privacy versus the Right of National Sovereignty: The Challenges Posed by New Technologies in Britain and China .”

Associate Professor Marina Svensson, Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies, Lund University will speak on “Social Media and Law Enforcement: A Human Rights Perspective.”

Following the presentations, there will be a discussion period where the students will be invited to give their views and ask questions to the experts.

Details of the speakers are as follows:

Dr. Kerry Brown is the Head of Asia Programme at Chatham House, and Leader of the Europe China Research and Advice Network (ECRAN), funded by the European Union and advising the External Action Service. Kerry Brown was previously Research Associate of the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy, SOAS. Educated at Cambridge , London and Leeds Universities , he worked in Japan , Australia , and the Inner Mongolian region of China , before joining the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London . He worked in the China Section and then served as First Secretary, Beijing , from 2000 to 2003, and Head of the Indonesia East Timor Section at the FCO from 2003 to 2005. He currently sits on the board of the Great Britain China Centre and is an Associate of the China Policy Institute at Nottingham University . He completed a PhD at Leeds University in Modern Chinese Language and Politics in 2004, which has since been published as part of the Global Oriental Cambridge University Inner Asian Studies Series. His Struggling Giant: China in the 21st Century was published in June 2007, and The Rise of the Dragon �C Chinese Investment Flows in the Reform Period in February 2008. He has been published in The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, The Independent, The Far Eastern Economic Review, Index on Censorship, and other publications in the US, Europe, China, Hong Kong, and Australia, and commented on China for the BBC, ITN, ABC, the Today Programme, Al Jazeera, CNN and others. He published several book including `Friends and Enemies: The Past, Present, and Future of the Communist Party of China’ (Anthem, London , 2009); `China 2020: The Coming Decade’ Edited, (Chandos Publishing, Oxford , 2011); `Ballot Box China : Rural Democracy and Why it Matters for the Future of the People’s Republic’, (Zed Books, 2011)

Dr. Robert Weatherley is a lawyer with the English law firm Mills & Reeve LLP (铭瑞律师事务) and head of the firm,s China Group (中国部主管). He is also a lecturer in Chinese politics and law at Cambridge University and a former research student at the Renmin University in Beijing and Nankai University in Tianjin . Robert is author of four books on China , including The Discourse of Human Rights in China : Historical and Ideological Perspectives (1999) and Making China Strong: The Role of Nationalism in Chinese Thinking on Democracy and Human Rights (forthcoming).

Dr. Marina Svenssonis an Associate Professor at the Centre for East and Southeast Asian Studies, Lund University , Sweden . Her main research focus is on human rights, legal issues, media, and cultural heritage in China and Asia . Among her major publications are: Debating Human Rights in China: A Conceptual and Political History (Rowman and Littlefield, 2002.); The Chinese Human Rights Reader (M. E. Sharpe, 2001, co-editor with Stephen C. Angle); Gender Equality, Citizenship and Human Rights: Controversies and Challenges in China and the Nordic Countries (Routledge 2010, co-editor with Pauline Stoltz, Sun Zhongxin, and Qi Wang); and Making Law Work: Chinese Laws in Context (Cornell University Press 2011, co-editor with MattiasBurell).

中欧人权系列讲座是受欧盟资助的学术项目。作为系列讲座之一,爱尔兰人权中心很荣幸能与中国政法大学人权与人道主义法研究所共同组织本次活动。

本次讲座将邀请三位国际专家讨论当代人权和科技领域的重要问题。

凯瑞布朗(Kerry Brown)博士,英国皇家国际事务研究所亚洲项目负责人以及欧洲中国研究咨询网络(ECRAN)组织负责人,演讲的题目是《人权和科技:国家在对公民隐私权保护中的作用新媒体时代下界限在哪?》

魏德礼(Robert Weatherley)博士,剑桥大学政治与国际研究系讲师,演讲题目是《隐私权与国家主权:新科技给中英两国带来的挑战》。

史雯(Marina Svenssonis)副教授,瑞典隆德大学东亚及东南亚研究中心,演讲题目是《社会媒体和法律实施:以人权为角度》。

演讲之后会有自由讨论时间,同学们可以自由表达观点以及向专家提问。

凯瑞布朗(Kerry Brown)博士,英国皇家国际事务研究所(Chatham House)亚洲项目负责人以及欧洲中国研究咨询网络(ECRAN)组织负责人, ECRAN由欧盟资助并为其提供对外行动咨询服务。曾任伦敦大学亚非学院国际研究及外交中心研究助理,曾在剑桥、伦敦和利兹大学学习,在日本、澳大利亚、内蒙古地区工作。曾在英国外交及联邦事务部(FCO)工作,2000-2003年任中国部第一秘书,2003-2005年任印尼-东帝汶部主管。现为英中协会董事会成员,诺丁汉大学中国政策研究所研究员。2004年取得利兹大学博士学位,论文题目《中国现代语言和政治》,后收录在剑桥大学全球东方学亚洲研究丛书。20076月出版《挣扎的巨人:21世纪的中国》,20082月出版《巨龙腾飞-中国改革时期的投资流向》。论文发表在《卫报》、《每日电讯报》、《独立报》、《远东经济评论》、《检查索引(Index on Censorship)》,及其他美国、欧洲、中国大陆、香港、澳大利亚媒体,曾在BBCITNABCCNN、半岛电视台等媒体对中国问题发表评论。出版著作包括《朋友和敌人:中国共产党的过去、现在和未来》(Anthem出版社,2009)、《中国2020:未来的十年》(Chandos出版社,2011),《中国的投票箱:农村民主及其对中国未来的重要性》(Zed Books出版社,2011)。
